Hi everyone! So I decided a while ago that I wanted to start a blog but now I have finally done it! In a little less than a month I will fly to Philadelphia and meet the other people (30 total, I think) who will be part of my "stage". We will then travel as a group to Togo and begin our journey.
There are a couple reasons why I wanted to keep a blog. The third goal of the PC (for a list of acronyms, look under the FAQ section) is to teach Americans about the people and culture in the country where volunteers serve. This blog will be my direct attempt at achieving this goal. Also. I hope it's a way to keep connected with everyone back home. Please feel free to comment on my posts, as I'm sure they will encourage me to write more and more often. Lastly, I plan to use this as a public journal which I can look back upon and remember the things I did and the events that occurred. I will try to update as often as possible, but my access to Internet and free time will be the major factors in that.
So what am I doing? Well, I am dedicating 26 months to serving with the Peace Corps. My title is a Small Business Advisor. I fly out of California on May 31st and will have 2 months of training before swearing in as an official Peace Corps Volunteer in August. Training is supposed to be pretty tough, both mentally and physically. I will live with a host family and have lessons during the day on language, Togolese culture, and other basics on life in Togo.
For now, I'm just trying to spend a lot of time with friends and family and get a head start on packing. I don't really enjoy packing to begin with, and packing for 2 years is definitely not fun. My last day at work is Saturday. I leave for Hawaii next Tuesday. When I get back, I've got a week at home before going camping for memorial weekend, and then I leave the morning after I get back. This month is going to fly by...
